A chi hair straighteners  CHARITY for the homeless wants to tackle the problem of thousands of homes lying empty across North Wales.

Last Monday the Daily Post revealed that up to 8,000 homes were lying unused in the region while thousands of first-time buyers are priced out of the housing market.

Shelter Cymru has now appointed an empty homes officer to work with local authorities to tackle the issue.

They hope to copy successful schemes in South Wales and England which have made huge inroads in areas like Kent.

A spokeswoman said: “Shelter Cymru believes that making better use of empty homes across Wales can make a contribution to the supply of affordable housing in local areas and welcomes the Daily Post’s highlighting of the issue.”

The empty homes officer Sue Lee said: “These statistics show the problem there is with empty homes in North Wales.

“Wales has fallen behind England in dealing with this problem and it is a big issue, but people are now positive about dealing with it.
